4:30 – 6:30 pm (Nairobi); 8:30 – 10:30 pm (Bangkok)

via Go-To-Webinar

This peer exchange is organized by OCHA and InterAction as co-chairs of the Global Protection Cluster Task Team on the Centrality of Protection. The purpose of this peer exchange is to reflect on progress made and challenges encountered in implementing the provisions of the IASC Protection Policy related to identifying HCT protection priorities and developing a system-wide protection strategy. A dedicated protection strategy, initiated and promoted by the HC through the HCT and informed by the Humanitarian Response Plan, can be a key guiding document for the humanitarian community to address the most urgent protection concerns and work toward collective protection outcomes. We can draw lessons from over a dozen HCT Protection Strategies that have been adopted, and those currently under development.

By gathering several experts actively involved in the creation and implementation of various strategies, we aim to identify best practices and lessons learned, as well as areas for improvement, and brainstorm around recommendations in this regard.

Panelists at the peer exchange will include

  • Mr. Ramesh Rajasingham, Deputy Regional Humanitarian Coordinator, Syria Crisis

  • Ms. Anna Rich, Protection Cluster Coordinator Ukraine

  • Mr. Max Bonnel, Humanitarian Affairs Officer & Inter-Cluster Coordinator, OCHA Ethiopia

  • Ms. Dalia Aranki, ProCap Advisor

In addition to being a useful exercise for all of us participants, the main takeaways from our conversation will be presented at a Stocktake event on the Inter-Agency Standing Committee Policy on Protection in Humanitarian Action and the Centrality of Protection, which will take place in October 2018 under the auspices of the Global Protection Cluster.

Please contact Marlies Bull (bull1@un.org) with any questions.

We look forward to seeing you online.

Registration deadline: 09 Oct 2018
Starting date: 11 Oct 2018

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Owing to different life experiences, women and men differ in how they experience, respond to, and recover from disasters. When disaster strikes, men and women have different abilities and ways of responding, and, in the end, the impacts are different. Gender-based social, economic, religious and cultural construct marginalize women across all communities and groups, irrespective of class, caste, economic standing, status, ethnicity or age. Therefore, a disaster response must meet the disaster-related needs of women, men, and all marginalized groups, and those stakeholders should participate in disaster preparedness, mitigation, recovery and reconstruction.

Based on this premise, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 - 2030, states that, in designing and implementing policies and plans on disaster reduction, the participation of relevant stakeholders such as women and the marginalized groups should be considered. It also emphasizes the need for capacity development measures for women to participate effectively in each and every steps of disaster preparedness, emergency response, recovery and reconstruction. The course seeks to fill the gaps in practical guidance in gender mainstreaming in disaster risk management at the local and community level.

This course will strengthen the participants’ knowledge and skills in integrating gender in the concepts and practices of community-based disaster risk management (CBDRM) for the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

General Course Objectives
The main course objective is to build the capacity of participants to integrate gender perspective in disaster risk management so as to ensure that both women and men have the necessary capacities in addressing their respective vulnerabilities to enable them to protect themselves, their families and their immediate communities. RSM Hostile Environment Awareness Training: Level 4 and 5 Programs

Within today’s unstable and increasingly volatile world the humanitarian aid and development community faces increasing challenges as it operates in remote, dynamic and often challenging environments. The risks of crime, LGBTQIA and gender-based violence, civil disorder, the actions of hostile governments, corruption and extortion, terrorism and insurgency, the presence of mines and UXO in post-conflict environments, natural disasters, disease and poor medical infrastructures, as well as road traffic accidents all place people and the wider interests of the organization at significant risk. This makes personal safety and security awareness central to an effective duty of care program; protecting people by building knowledge and developing practical and real-world skills through highly interactive and immersive learning programs.

RSM has supported over 350 organizations prepare their staff to work safely, productively and confidently in complex, fluid and challenging environments. We provide immersive HEAT programs for organizations such as Oxfam, Care, Save the Children, ADRA and World Learning. Our training is a proven blend of theoretical and practical training, drawing on our instructors’ firsthand experience of working within more than 75 medium, high and extreme risk countries. And critically, we pride ourselves in that all of our team brings considerable sector experience to our HEAT program. Our courses allow organizations to send individuals or small groups to this critical training; and we can run large and tailored courses upon demand. We also run RE-HEAT courses for those who have previously attended a HEAT course, and all attendees get 2 years free access to our eLearning program, allowing them to continue their learning journey, while reducing the risk of knowledge and skill fade.

Country: Italy
Organization: EIUC
Registration deadline: 15 Oct 2018
Starting date: 26 Nov 2018
Ending date: 30 Nov 2018

International election observation plays an important role in international relations since almost thirty years. The Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation adopted by the UN in 2005 is one of the first attempts of the international Community to set up standard rules recognized at international level. The European Union is strongly committed to contribute to all democratic processes around the world through various activities which include the electoral observation. The adoption of EU guidelines on preconditions for EU observation missions and a code of conduct for EU electoral observers represented an important step towards enhanced co-ordination and serve as a basis for all electoral observers.

EIUC has developed a course aiming at providing training to civilian staff in election observation missions at the first steps of their career (i.e. short term observers). Selected applicants will be allowed to become aware of the role, the tasks and the status of international observers, and will be given a theoretical and practical training on election observation and election observation missions functioning.

The training is organised with the patronage of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Czech Republic and Spain. The Foreign Ministry is responsible for the State’s functions, tasks and duties in matters concerning Italy’s political, economic, social and cultural relations with other countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic is a Czech government agency which is responsible for international relations of the Czech Republic. The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation is the department of Government of Spain responsible for Spain's foreign relations.

How to register:

Applicants fulfilling the conditions for participation will be accepted on the basis of a "first subscribed, first in" policy. EIUC reserves the right to select participants based on their academic and professional profile. Should the required minimum number of participants for one session not be met, the training programme will be postponed to the following session. Participants will have the option either to be reimbursed or participate in a successive edition.
